BSA | The Software Alliance faced a major challenge in Latin America, where 65% of installed software was illegal, representing a loss of more than $4 billion. To address this situation, Proyecto Macondo was launched to reduce software piracy and educate about the benefits of using legal software. Macondo’s strategy focused on raising awareness among users and authorities about the risks and consequences of piracy through lectures, seminars and a strong public relations campaign that included press releases and conferences.
In addition to education and awareness-raising activities, Macondo worked closely with the authorities to strengthen legal actions against piracy. This cooperation made it possible to carry out operations and trainings that highlighted the legal consequences of illegal software practices. Thanks to these initiatives, the campaign achieved a significant 4% reduction in the software piracy rate in the region between 2007 and 2012, improving digital security and market competitiveness.
BSA | The Software Alliance’s Proyecto Macondo not only decreased the piracy rate in Latin America, but also educated the population on the importance of adopting legal software practices, contributing to a safer and fairer digital environment for all. This integrated and collaborative approach proved to be key in the fight against software piracy and in strengthening the digital economy in the region.
